A.B.D.'de ormanlık alanlar bütün ülkenin kullanılabilir su ihtiyacının 3/4 ünü karşılamakta, fakat buna karşılık toplam yüzölçümünün ancak 1/3 ünü kaplamaktadır. Ortalama olarak, ormanlık alanların bu su verimi ormansız alanların su veriminden 6 kat fazladır. Ormanlık alanlarla ormansız yerler arasındaki en büyük farkları şöyle sıralayabiliriz: a) Ormanların sahip bulunduğu tepe çatılarının büyük ve etkin örtü alanı ve toprakaltı kök sistemleri. b) Orman ağaçlarının yaprak ve ibrelerinin ölü örtüye her yıl fazla miktarda katkıda bulunması. c) Orman örtüsü altındaki yüzey toprağı karakteristiklerinin uzun süre stabil kalması. Hidrolojik bakımdan bu karakteristikler (1) yağışın intersepsiyonu, (2) evapotranspirasyon ve (3) infiltrasyon süreçleri (Process) içinde önem taşırlar.
