Abstract (2. Language):
Blue stains are caused by minute, thread-like organisms know as fungi, the chief of which are species of Ceratocystis, Scopularium, Al-ternaria, Leptographium, Cladosporium, Phialophora Macrophoma etc. Blue stain fungi that attack the sapwood of freshly cut and stored wood products are responsible for a heavy annual financial loss particularly insoftwoods in this country. The discoloration of wood occurs as spots, streaks or patches of varying intensities of color. Under favourable moisture and temperature conditions staining fungi may developc rapidly.
Since blue stain fungi do not attack the cell-wall appreciably, they affect the strength of the wood only slightly. Their greatest effect is usually confined to the shock resistance or toughness. One of the important effects of blue stain is also to reduce the grade of certain classes ol timber.
Blue stain spreads both along and across grain, especially the wood rays. Blue staining fungi get their nourishment from food materials stored chiefly in paranchym cells in cross sections. These fungi can grow at temperatures between -3 to 40°C, but most quickly develope at 20 to 28 C7. The minimum moisture content for the growth of blue slain fungi is from 18 to 20 percent, whereas the maximum may be up to 135 to 140 per cent, based on oven dry weight.

Abstract (Original Language):
50 cm.
