BODY COMPOSITION ASSESMENT IN CHILD AND YOUNG ATHLETES: COMPARISON STUDY

Journal Name:

Publication Year:

Abstract (2. Language):
The purpose of this study was to compare anthropometric method and bioelectrical impedance (BIA) regression equations used in assessment of body composition in child and young athletes. Forty -one boy (Body weight=55.3 ± 7.6 kg, Height=166.1 ± 6.7 cm), 48 girl (Body weight=47.2 ± 7.3 kg, Height=158.0 ± 7.6 cm) athletes aged 11-17 participated in this study. Lean body mass (LBM) and percentage of body fat (BF %) were estimated by using anthropometric method (D-W) (Durnin- Womersley, 1976) and four different equations of the BIA (Deurenberg et al., 1990; Schaeffer et al., 1994; Sun et al., 2003; Tanita BIA analyzer, 401A). The differences and relationships between LBM and BF% were determined with ANOVA and Pearson’s correlation techniques, respectively. The consistency between anthropometric method and BIA regression equations were determined by the Bland-Altman analysis. BF% of girls was higher than boys, however, LBM of girls was lower than boys (p<0.01). BF% and LBM estimated from D-W were significantly different from other BIA estimations except from Schaeffer et al. (1994) (p<0.01). BF% and LBM estimated from BIA were significantly different from others, except from Deurenberg et al. (1990) and Sun et al. (2003) estimations (p<0.01). Although BF% and LBM represented high correlation between D-W and BIA estimations, Bland-Altman analysis showed that consistency of upper and lower limits were high. The results of this study showed that BF% and LBM estimated from anthropometric and BIA regression equations can not be used interchangeably in child and young athletes.
