Abstract (2. Language):
Focusing on two short stories by Sait Faik, “Ben Ne Yapayım?” (What Am I Supposed to Do?) and “Öyle Bir Hikaye” (Just a Story), this article analyzes the reconstruction of Turkish linguistic and cultural otherness through divergent translation practices. By paying special attention to the translation of Turkish metaphors and similes, whether historically fixed or created by the author, it becomes obvious that languages themselves are great travelers being nurtured on universal/transcultural images and idioms. It is also demonstrated that source text doesn’t need to be systematically neutralized and decontextualized when rewritten in such target languages as French (published instances) or English (my own instances).
