THE GRAVE TYPES SEEN IN ANTANDROS NECROPOLIS IN THE HELLENISTIC PERIOD

In this article, the Hellenistic graves uncovered in the excavations of Antandros Necropolis between the
years of 2001-2008 have been assessed in general. Forty three cremations, 25 tile-graves, 20 simple inhumations,
five graves with altar, five sarcophagi, two circle shaped graves and one amphora grave were determined as
seven different types of burials during this period.
Cremation ranked first among the burial types seen in the Hellenistic period. The increase in the number
of the cremations may be due to Alexander the Great’s arriving in the Asia Minor and the changes in the
demographic structure. According to their frequencies, roof tile graves and simple inhumations were the second
and inhumations were preferred by the individuals with low incoming. The graves with altar and circle shaped
graves were the most remarkable ones in this period. Sarcophagi were appeared as the favorite type in Classical
period for adults in early Hellenistic Period. The amphora grave, which was for fetuses or new-born babies was
represented with only one sample in this period.

Bu makalede Antandros nekropolisinin 2001–2008 yllar arasnda gerçekle tirilen kazlarda aç a
çkarlan Hellenistik dönemin mezar tipleri genel hatlaryla de erlendirilmi tir. Bu döneme tarihlenen 43
kremasyon, 25 çat kiremidi mezar, 20 basit toprak gömü, 5 sunak mezarlar, 5 ta lahit mezar, 2 dairesel planl
mezar ile 1 amphoradan olu an yedi fakl tipte mezar tespit edilmi tir.
Hellenistik dönemin en fazla ra bet gören mezar tipi kremasyonlardr. Bir önceki döneme oranla
saylarnda büyük bir art gözlenen kremasyonlarn bu art , Büyük +skender’in bölgeye geli i ve de i en
demografik dengenin bir sonucu olarak de erlendirilmektedir. Yine bu dönemin sayca fazla olan mezar
tiplerinden çat kiremidi ve basit toprak gömülerden, basit toprak gömüler gelir seviyesi dü ük bireyler için
tercih edilen mezar türüdür. Dönemin en dikkat çeken gömü tipleri ise, sunak mezarlar ve dairesel planl
mezarlardr. Lahitler, klasik dönemin tercih edilen mezar tipi olup, saylar çok fazla olmamakla beraber erken
Hellenistik dönemde yeti kinler için tercih edilen tiptir. Fetus veya yeni do mu bir bebek için kullanld
dü ünülen amphora ise, bu dönemde tek örnek ile temsil edilmektedir.
