Abstract (2. Language):
Natural radioactivity concentrations (226Ra, 232Th and 40K) in Pileki stone and soil samples collected from Pileki Cave in Rize province were determined using the high-purity germanium detector (HPGe). In the collected samples, the activity concentrations of the natural radionuclides was found to vary between 29.68 ± 2.71 and 44.50 ± 2.71 Bq/kg for 226Ra, between 31.61 ± 3.08 and 41.52 ± 3.34 Bq/kg for 232Th, and between 598.67 ± 15.03 to 802.96 ± 18.30 Bq/kg for 40K. In order to evaluate the radiological hazard of the natural radioactivity, radium equivalent activity (Raeq), the external hazard index (Hex), the absorbed gamma dose rate (D) and the annual effective dose equivalent (AEDE) were calculated and the results were compared with the recommended values by international organizations. The average annual effective dose equivalent that visitors of Pileki cave will receive on each visit was calculated as 0.085 mSv, which is below the dose value recommended by the international organizations. As a result, this study showed that natural radiation does not have any risk to health of people who have visited to Pileki cave and used bowls made from Pileki stone.
