Abstract (2. Language):
Diabetes mellitus is a major disease characterized by derangement in carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, affecting nearly 10% of the population. Several drugs such as biguanides and sulfonyl ureas are presently available to reduce hyperglycemia. These drugs have side effects and thus searching for a new class of compounds is essential. Therefore, it is prudent to look for options in herbal medicine for diabetes. Adhatoda zeylanica is popularly used for the treatment of diabetes. A review of literature reveals that a new moiety, 2โ€™, 4-dihydroxy chalcone-4-glucoside has been identified in the flowers of the plant. The present investigation was designed to study the antihyperglycemic effect of the chalcone containing Adhatoda zeylanica flower extract. A series of chalcone derivatives were synthesized (AC1- AC11& BC1- BC6) and their anti hyperglycemic activity was evaluated. The antidiabetic effect of the newly synthesized chalcone (AC6) was higher than the plant extract.
