LEWIS MODEL AND DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: AN EVALUATION FOR TURKEY

In this study, the validity of A. Lewis (1954) 's views on the labor market in open and closed economies set forth in his study “Economic Development with Unlimited Supply of Labor" for Turkey as a developing country has been evaluated. Turkey, like most of the developing countries, exported labor force significantly from 1960s onwards to the economic crisis of 1973. Though the export of labor force has been reduced following the period of the economic crisis, foreign direct investments in the country is an indicator of a process that supports Lewis’s views.

Bu çalışmada, A. Lewis (1954)’in “Sınırsız Emek Arzı ile Ekonomik Kalkınma” adlı eserinde kapalı ve açık ekonomide işgücü piyasasını inceleyen görüşlerinin gelişmekte olan bir ülke olan Türkiye için geçerliliği değerlendirilmiştir. Türkiye pek çok gelişmekte olan ülke gibi 1960’lardan 1973 ekonomik krizine kadar önemli düzeyde iş gücü ihraç etmiştir. Ekonomik kriz sonrası dönemde iş gücü ihracı kesintiye uğramasına karşın, ülkeye yönelen doğrudan yabancı sermaye yatırımları Lewis’in görüşlerini destekler bir sürece işaret etmektedir.
