Geleneksel diyet alışkanlıklarının değişmesi sonucu, şeker tüketiminin ve yeme sıklığının artması ile tüm toplumun oral mikroflora-smda değişiklikler meydana gelmiştir. Plaktaki mutans streptokoklarının sayısı giderek artmış ve böylece diş çürüğü toplumda yaygın hale gelmiştir.
