SHORTENED DENTAL ARCH: AN EVALUATION OF AESTHETICS AND ORAL FUNCTION

Journal Name:

Publication Year:

Abstract (2. Language):
The aim of this study was to evaluate the patients wtth Shortened Dental Arches (SDA) and compare for oral function and aesthetics wtth or wtthout Removable Partial Dentures (RPD). The patients of this study were 258 patients; 123 males (mean age: 60.52±7.98) and 135 females (mean age: 61.44±8.06), wtth posterior tooth loss. The study group evaluated in two groups; with RPD (n=106) and wtthout RPD (n= 152). In addition subjects were reported age, gender, duration of SDA and duration of wearing the RPD. Statistical analysis included Kruskall-Wallis test and chi-square tests. There were significant statistical differences between the subjects with SDA and RPD wtth ati the symptoms; TMJ pain (p=0.008), TMJ sounds (p<0.001), mobility (p<0.05), difficutty in opening mouth (p<0.001), chewing time (p<0.05), other compiications (unllateral and/or anterior chewing) (p=0.002), avoiding conversation (p<0.001) and laughing (p<0.05). TMJ pain also was found to be statistically signffcant for female patients (p<0.001) and younger age group (50-60 age, p< 0.001). Female patients were found to be statisticaly signifcant for the symptoms; avoiding conversation (p<0.001) and laughing (p<0.001), dffficutty in opening mouth and other compiications (p<0.05). The results of our study suggested that the prevalence of the symptoms of TMJ disorders were higher for the patients who have SDA without PRD. Regarding female patients reported having TMJ pain and anxiety for aesthetics. Age was found to be positively correlated wtth TMJ sounds but negatively correlated wtth TMJ pain. Planning prosthetic treatment for the patients with posterior tooth loss, the practitioner should regard the symptoms of TMJ disorders.
