Abstract (2. Language):
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the mandibular alveolar residuel ridge resorption and investigate the relationship between age, period of edentulism, body mass index and residuel ridge resorption in edentulous women and men. Material and Methods: Forty-six edentulous individuals (23 women, 23 men) were included to the study. Osteoporotic patients were excluded from the study. The body mass indexes of the each subject was calculated. The amount of residuel ridge resorption was measured on panoramic radiographs using a previously described technique that calculates the ratio of the inferior border of mandible to the crest of residuel ridge to the distance from the inferior border of mandible to the crest of the inferior border of the mental foramen. Data were statistically analyzed using SPSS 13.0. Results: There was no statistically significant difference regarding age, period of edentulism and body mass index between two genders (p>0.05). The ratio corresponding the residuel ridge resorbsion were found higher for women (1,87±0,32 mm) than in men (1,96±0,37). However, the results were not statistically significant (p=0.3). Conclusion: Result of the study demonstrated that the mandibular alveolar residuel ridge resoption occurs similarly in men and women without osteoporosis.
