Abstract (2. Language):
The purpose of this study is to discover if there is an association between acute pericoronitis due to the eruption of third molars and upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) in young adults. 1578 partially erupted third molar teeth belonging to 735 soldiers with an mean age of 20.5±0.3S were included to the research. They were investigated in respec to URTI incidence for I week prior and 1 week and later the acute pericoronitis, normal extraction and surgical extraction, and they were compared with the control group having no infection incidence at 3rd molar region. The findings of UR TI incidence I week before and 1 week after the diagnosis of acute pericoronitis were significantly higher than those of the control group. Acute pericoronitis reoccurs in a great extent between 5 and 12 months if the tooth is not extracted. During the reoccurrence URTI showed an incidence as high as that of the first attack. The effects of emotional and physical stress on acute pericoronilis were determined. URTT can be seen before or simultaneous acute pericoronitis, it can be provoked by acute pericoronilis as well, For this reason, the extraction of 3rd molar partially erupted tcclh is indicative to prevent acute pericoronitis development and possible URTI.
