Abstract (2. Language):
In addition to being as the poorest country in Europe, Moldova is a small yet an important country due to its cultural commonalities with Romania, Russian influences on its culture and politics and its orientation toward the European Union. If we add its federal system in which two autonomous republics of Transdniester and Gagavuzia to all these, Moldova becomes an interesting country to study the formation and the development of national identity. This article examines Moldovan national identity mostly from the perspective of Romanian and Russian influences and explains how its Gagavuzia and Transdniester regions fit in all these. It also presents how current Moldovan intellectuals who play an important role in the articulation of national identity see Moldova in terms of its identity.
