The effect of cutting parameters on
cutting force at AISI 1040 steel turning

Abstract (2. Language):
The main objective of the research is based on
machining surface roughness of the desired product
as a minimum. We can see reseached a lot of
parameters that affect the surface roughness in the
past studies. Cutting force is the most important of
parameters on surface roughness. For this reason, it
was researched a lot about cutting force. Especially,
it was investigated why cutting force changes In this
study, it was researched connection between cutting
force and cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed
rate, depth of cut) on turning under dry cutting
conditions. If we can find optimum cutting
parameters to determined better cutting force, we
can obtain the best surface roughness value. This is
extreme important. All studies are this reason.
AISI 1040 which is widely used in the manufacturing
industry, was used as the workpiece material in
experimentes. It is used on vehicle, engine,
machinery and apparatus for making medium forced
parts, traction hooks, gears, shafts. It is alloyed
steels. It is also known as carbon steel because it
contains a high ratio carbon contenent. The
experiments are performed SMARC LC360B brand
lathe. The maximum speed of the machine with a
digital measuring system is 2000 rev/min. It has 2.2
kW engine power. The experiments were done with
cemented carbur cutting team which is CNMG
120404-NM KLP 115 form. The machining tests
were carried out at three different cutting speed (87
m/min, 143 m/min, 238 m/min), at three different
feed rate (0.052 mm/rev, 0.104 mm/rev, 0.162
mm/rev) and at different depth of cut. Using 250 mm
length and 50 diameter AISI 1040 steel as workpiece
were carried out total of 27 machining tests. Three
workpiece was used and each piece of work was
done on 9 test because the top of the machined
surface for failure to perform another operation.
Each experiment was carried out for about 20
seconds. Measured cutting force thanks to
dinamometer under different cutting conditions were
analysied with Dynoware programme on computer.
It was measured average value of cutting force (Fc)
on Dynoware programme. To definite relation
between analysed the cutting forces and cutting
parameters, charts were obtained and tried to
explain. In other words, optimum cutting parameters
were tried to obtain.
According to obtained results, it was shown that
cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and
depth of cut) clearly affected cutting force. In other
word, cutting force changed because cutting
parameter values were changed. Altough cutting
force decreased when cutting speed increased, it
increased when feed rate and depth of cut increased.
So, cutting parameters are very important to cutting
force.

Teknolojide büyük öneme sahip olan talaşlı imalatta istenilen boyutta ve hassas bitirme yüzeyinde
parça elde edebilmek en önemli amaçtır. Şu ana kadar yapılan pek çok çalışma bunun içindir. Bu
çalışmada da, kuru şartlar altında imalat sanayisinde genişçe kullanımı olan AISI 1040 çeliğin
tornalamasında oluşan kesme kuvvetlerinin, kesme parametreleri (kesme hızı, ilerleme, kesme
derinliği) ile değişimi araştırılmıştır. Deneyler (CNMG 120404-NM KLP 115) formundaki sementit
karbür kesme takımı kullanılarak yapılmıştır. İşlemler üç farklı kesme hızında (87 m/dak, 143
m/dak, 238 m/dak), üç farklı ilerlemede (0.052 mm/dev, 0.104 mm/dev, 0.162 mm/dev) ve üç farklı
kesme derinliğinde (0.5 mm, 1 mm. 1.5 mm) gerçekleştirilmiştir. 250 mm uzunluk ve 50 mm çapında
AISI 1040 çeliği kullanılarak toplam 27 adet deney yapılmıştır. Farklı kesme şartları altında
dinamometre yardımıyla ölçülen kesme kuvvetleri Dynoware programı ile analiz edilmiştir. Analiz
edilen bu kesme kuvvetleri ile kesme parametreleri arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemek amacıyla grafikler
oluşturulup yorumlanmaya çalışılmıştır. Bir başka ifadeyle optimum kesme şartları belirlemeye
çalışılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre kesme parametrelerinin kesme kuvvetini önemli bir
biçimde etkilediği görülmüştür.
