Umar Ibn Khattab had made a great effect on Islamic history. In his ruling period, great developments occurred and the lands that Islam governs expanded to the utmost. Lots of initiatives came true in his time. He was also the first caliph walking around with a whip in his hand. As a personal trait, he liked to wander around with a whip in his hand. From his childhood he started to walk around with a whip, in the time of pre-Islamic Arabian paganism he didn‟t even drop his whip off his hand, he used it against his Muslim female slave, he walked around with a whip in the time of Caliph Abu Bakr, he continued this habit in the same way when he became caliph, by his hard character sometimes he chose to correct the wrongs that he saw in the society with his whip. In this article we will try to recognize Islam‟s second Caliph with his whip in his hand.

Ömer b. Hattab İslâm tarihinde büyük bir iz bırakmıştır. Onun zamanında büyük gelişmeler yaşanmış, İslâm‟ın hâkim olduğu sınırlar alabildiğine genişlemiştir. Birçok ilkler onun zamanında gerçekleşmiştir. O aynı zamanda elinde kırbaçla dolaşan ilk halife ünvanına da sahiptir. Yapı itibariyle elinde kırbaçla dolaşmayı seven biridir. Küçüklüğünden beri kırbaçla dolaşmaya başlamış, cahiliye döneminde kırbacını elinden düşürmemiş, bunu Müslüman olan cariyesine karşı kullanmış, Hz. Ebû Bekir döneminde kırbaçla dolaşmış, halife olduğunda da aynı şekilde bu alışkanlığını sürdürmüştür. Sert kişiliğiyle, toplumda gördüğü hataları bazen kırbacıyla düzeltme yoluna gitmiştir. Bu makalede İslâm‟ın ikinci halifesini elinde kırbacıyla tanımaya çalışacağız.
