Abstract (2. Language):
In today’s environment of scarce health care resources, it is an obligation for health care managers to assess the performance of hospitals and physicians. As the physician use almost 80% of health care resources, actions taken to improve efficiency and effectiveness should be focused on assessing and modifiying physician practice patterns. This article describes the issue of physician practice patterns and discusses managerial strategies involved in ensuring effective physician practice patterns. The objective of this paper is to stimulate debate about the implications of the variations shown in medical practices in terms of health policy, health services management, clinical practice and the role of the medical profession.
