This paper deals with the question of how familyand household, as the primary social arrangements of a given social structure, can best be distinguished from each other as units of analysis in social/sociological research. The paper suggests that the concept of family can best be conceptualized as the intimate social circle of the individual in akinship system and has no structure to be conceived in the fashion of nuc1ear-extendedor traditional- modem family dichotomies. The concept of household, on the other hand, refers to the primary informal social unit organized to provide the individual with the basic necessities of life. As such, the household is distinct from other social arrangements practicing resource pooling insofar as each member contributes in accordance with his ability and consumes in accordance with his needs. The paper concludes that the structure of households can best be studied by reference to the type of primary social relation which constitutes the principal impetus behind the formation and continuation of each uniL

Bu çalışma toplumsal yapı içinde yer alan birincil düzenlemeler olarak aile ve hanehalkının sosyal ve sosyolojik çalışmalarda analiz birimleri olarak birbirlerinden nasıl ayırt edilip tanımlanabilecekleri sorununu ele almaktadır. Çalışma, aileyi bireyin akrabalık sistemi içindeki özel toplumsal yakınlık alanı olarak kavramlaştırmanın daha uygun olacağını ve bu hali ile de çekirdek-geniş yahut geleneksel-modem dikotomileri içinde ele alınabilecek bir yapıya sahip olmadığını ifade etmektedir. Hanehalkı kavramı ise bireye hayatın temel ihtiyaçlannı temin etmek amacıyla organize olmuş birincil bir sosyal düzenleme olarak düşünülmektedir. Üyelerinin kudretleri oranında katkı yapıp, ihtiyaçlan oranında tüketmeleri nedeniyle ve bu uygulamayı sürdürdüğü müddetçe hanehalkı kaynaklannı tek bir havuzda toplama uygulaması yapan diğer sosyal düzenlemelerden farklıdır. Bu çerçeve içinde çalışma, son olarak, oluşum ve devamında temel etken olan birincil sosyal ilişkinin tipi dikkate alınmak suretiyle hanehalkının yapısının daha iyi incelenebileceğini ifade etmektedir.
