In Daisy Miller, Henry James has created, from a casually told simple and ordinary, real story, a complex and many-sided one that creates various effects. This article argues that the subtitle of the novel, the word "study", which is repeated several times in the course of the story is an important clue to understanding how the writer has achieved this transformation. The word "study" with its different meanings refers to both the subject and the narrative method of the work. The aim of this article is to examine the subtitle in its various implications, to point out how it describes the subject and the narrative method and finally to discuss the various effects created by the story in the novel from the points of view of both the novel's characters and its readers.

Henry James Daisy Miller adlı kısa romanında, tesadüfen duyduğu sıradan ve basit, gerçek bir öyküden çok yönlü, karmaşık sorunları ortaya koyan, duygu ve düşünce yüklü bir eser yaratmıştır. Bu dönüşümün nasıl sağlandığı konusunda romanın alt başlığı olan "inceleme" sözcüğü önemli bir ipucudur. Zira bu sözcük İngilizce'deki farklı anlamlan ile romanın hem konusu, hem de anlatım yöntemi hakkında bilgi verici niteliktedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, romanda birkaç kez tekrarlanan bu sözcüğü farklı anlamlan ile incelemek, böylece romanın konusu ve anlatım yöntemini irdelemek ve eserin gerek roman karakterleri gerekse okuyucular açısından ne gibi duygu ve düşüncelerle yüklü olduğunu ve ne gibi etkiler yarattığını araştırmaktır.
