Abstract (2. Language):
In 1956, the American poet Charles Olson was conducting a course in Black Mountain College which he entitled "history," discussing the concept of the "Great Man." As the course activity, he investigated the qualities of the great man in a given time and geography by looking at what was happening at the time. In the theoretical notes of this course, published under the title, The Special View of History, Olson draws connections between his notion of poetry, history and myth. For him, history, which he understands to be an activity ("finding out for yourself") and a method ("documentation, research, analysis"), is central to the poem. His pedagogical attitude, as manifest from the Black Mountain experience, and his letters document the active environment (the polis) he sought to create. The Maximus poems, which he started composing in the early 1950s and which we may define as an epic poem of man, presents a hero that can be traced from the poet Olson's archival research, pedagogical experience and correspondence. Trying to see the Maximus figure from these extra-poetic lenses would also give an idea as to the ethics and politics that lies beneath Olson's poetry. By selecting and studying the letters, essays and theoretical notes, this article seeks to investigate the Maximus poems from the perspective of the hero.
