Abstract (2. Language):
In the literature, condolence messages in the context of natural death were scrutinised from cultural and crosscultural aspects. However, diplomatic condolence messages were not investigated, with one exception, to the best knowledge of the author. The present study is the first of its kind and its focus is on the calques detected in the Turkish translations of condolence messages following a terrorist attack in light of translation studies. To this end, with purposive sampling, the internet was searched for authentic condolence messages from diplomatic sources, published with direct quotations, after the terrorist attack to a famous night club, Reina, in Istanbul, Turkey, on the New Year’s Eve, 2017. By taking a functionalist approach, the following research questions were analyzed: i. What is the typical macrostructure and register followed in the diplomatic messages of condolence after a terrorist attack in English and Turkish?, ii. What are the unconventional uses in register, if any, in the media translation in the case of terror attack to Reina, Turkey during the new year celebrations of 2017? For the first question, this study drew on condolence messages given as template in Tulun (1996), whereas for the second one, on Silva-Corvalán’s (1994) categorization modified by the author. The study by identifying the established macrostructure and register in such messages in both languages first, indicates the unconventional linguistic uses, being calques in diplomatic register in Turkish media translations of condolence messages, which would have implications for diplomatic text translation training and practice as well as linguistics.
