Makale, kendini referans alan bilgi edinmeyi amaçlayan bir sosyal bilim olasılığı üzerinde durmaktadır. Sosyal araştırmaların bu şekli, çağdaş kültürde hüküm süren köklü varsayımları araştırır, sorgular ve yaşamın diğer formlarının farkına varmaya çalışır. Bu yüzden sosyal bilimlerin bu bakış açısı, pragmatist bakış açısı olan davranışların temsil edilmesinden çok, dil ve bilginin insanın yapabilecekleri imkânları yükselttiği görüşü ile mükemmel bir şekilde örtüşmektedir. Soy kütüksel tarih ve sosyoloji, süreç sonrası arkeoloji ve antropolojide kritik dönüş örneklerinde olduğu gibi çeşitli sosyal araştırma şekilleri, geniş bir alana yayılan disiplinlerde, bu kendini referans alan bilgiyi araştırmıştır. Makale, bu kendini referans alan bilgiyi çağdaş Amerikan pragmacılığı bağlamı içine yerleştirir (örneğin, Rorty, Bernstein). Bu tür bilginin radikal geleneksel yeni pragmatizm ile özelliklede antifoundasyonalist (temelcilik karşıtı) eleştiri fikriyle bağlantılı olduğu tartışılmaktadır.
