The purpose of writing this article is to compile the information regarding the bi-layer tablet technology and the various aspects of the bi-layered tablets which are often considered in the successful development of the dosage form. Bi-layer tablet is a new era in the development of controlled release formulation along with various features to provide a way of successful drug delivery system. It is suitable to prepare the tablets in the form of multi layers which are used for the administration of two drugs which are chemically incompatible. Several pharmaceutical companies are currently developing bi-layered tablets, for a variety of reasons such as patent extension, patient compliance, additive effect, reduction of dosage regimen and to achieve sustained release of drugs with minimal side effects.
