Abstract (2. Language):
Evaluation ofthe mean corpuscular volume (mcv) in liver cirrhosis. Introduction and aim: In chronic liver diseases some changes in hematologic parameters are observed. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between MCV and aetiology as well as the severity of liver cirrhosis. Our patients (n:358) were divided into three groups; cirrhosis due to alcohol (group I), alcohol associated with any other aetiologic factors (group II) and any aetiologic factor other than alcohol (group III). MCV values in each group were determined and compared. We also inves-tigated the relationship betvveen MCV values and the Child-Pugh's stage. MCV values were found to be significantly higher in Child B than Child A and Child C than Child B (Child A-B p<0.001, Child B-C p<0<001, Child A-C p<0.0001). MCV values and Child-Pugh scores were found to have positive correlation and increased each other (r=0.3 p<0.01). Macrocytosis is frequently encountered also in liver cirrhosis due to causes other than alcohol. MCV values increase parellel to hepatic dysfunction.
