The relationship between resorption of mandibular residual ridge and the severity of osteoporosis in elderly edentulous patients mas investigated. A total of 36 patients (12 male, 24 female) were included in the study. The height of the mandibular residual ridge was measuredby use of the mentalforamen on panoramic radiographs. The presence and the severity of osteoporosis was determined with measurements from femur and lumbal spine by dual photon X-ray absorbsiometry (DEXA). In the male group there was correlation between reduction of mandibular residual ridge and osteoporosis in the lumbal spine (r= -0.401, SD^0.289), and in the female group between reduction of mandibular residual ridge and osteoporosis İn the femur neck (r= -0.535, SD=0.308) and botii were statistically significant. When all patients were considered, there were significant correlation between height of the mandibular residual ridge (r= -0.404, SD=0.1568), osteoporosis of the femur neck and height of the mandibular residual ridge fr* -0.416, SD=0.169). The blood analysis showed no significance. This study indicates the strong relationship between osteoporosis and reduction of mandibular residual ridge.

Bu araştırmada, tam dişsiz hastalardaki mandibular kret rezorbsiyonu (MKR) ile osteoporozun şiddeti arasındaki ilişki araştırıldı. Çalışmaya 12'sİ erkek 24'ü kadın toplam 36 hasta katıldı. Mandibular kretlerin yüksekliği panoromik radyografide foramen mentalenin görüntüsünü referans alan Wical tekniği ile belirlendi. Osteoporozu belirlemek ve şiddetini saptamak için dual foton x-ray absorpsiyometre (DEXA) ile lumbal ver-tebralardan ve femur başından ölçümler yapıldı, Bütün hastalarda total alkalen fosfataz, serum kalsiyum ve serum fosfor değerleri ölçüldü. Elde edilen veriler student-t testi ile korelasyon önem kontrolü testi ile değerlendirildi. Sonuçlar değerlendirildiğinde erkeklerde lumbal ver-tebradaki osteoporoz değerleri île MKR arasında (r= -0.401, SD=0.289) korelasyon bulundu ve osteoporoz değerleri ile MKR arasında (r= -0.535, SD=0.308) korelasyon bulundu ve istatistiksel olarak anlamlıydı (p<0.05). Hastaların bütünü değerlendirildiğinde tam protez takma süresi ile MKR arasında (r=0.469, BD=0.151), lumbal vertebra osteoporoz değerleri ile MKR arasında (r= -0.404) ve femur başı osteporoz değerleri ile MKR arasında (r= -0.416, SD=0.169) istatistiksel olarak anlamlı bir korelasyon bulundu (p<0.05). Hastaların kan değerlerinde önemli bir değişiklik yoktu. Bu çalışma osteoporoz ile MKR arasında güçlü bir ilişki olduğunu ortaya koymuştur.
