Abstract (2. Language):
Prof. Howard S. Becker, a sociologist at the North Western University, in his paper entitled "Photography arid Sociology", indicated that photography and sociology have approximately the same birth date, if sociology's birth counted as the publication of Comte's work luhich gave it its name, and photography's birth as the date in 1839 when Daguerre made public his method for fixing an image on a metal plate. According to the author, from the beginning, both photography and sociology worked on a variety of projects; and among these, for both, was the exploration of society. This paper aims to shed light on the relation between the concept of social change, which İs one of the main areas of interest in sociology, and photography. In doing this, the author, firstly, tries to reach a brief workable understanding of social documentary photography making use of concepts such as "intention and aim", "institutional structure" and "the importance of publication". After a brief discussion of what the social change is, several examples throughout the history of photography are examined, revealing how these photographic efforts contributed to social change.
