Differentiation in the Theory of Rent: From Smith to Ricardo

The success of the Ricardian theory of rent stems from its ability to represent the theory of rent of Classical School. However, it is crucial to note that Ricardo constituted his rent theory by discussing and eliminating the inconsistencies he observed in Smith’s rent theory. For this reason, it seems that Smith’s rent theory, as a starting point, is important to evaluate the Ricardian rent theory. On the other hand, differentiation in the theory of rent from Smith to Ricardo is meaningful only with the historical background. Therefore, this paper aims to analyse and compare Smith’s and Ricardo’s rent theories with regard to the historical conditions in which they lived and also to the leading political ideas of their eras. The conclusion is that the most important element shaping rent theories of Smith and Ricardo is the level of development of industrial capitalism.

Ricardo’nun rant teorisinin başarısı, Klasik İktisat Okulunun rant teorisini temsil etmesinden kaynaklanmaktadır. Ancak, Ricardo’nun teorisini, Smith’in rant teorisinden hareketle oluşturduğu gözardı edilmemelidir. Ricardo’nun amacı tutarsız bulduğu Smith’in rant teorisini tutarlı hale getirmek olduğundan, Smith’in rant teorisi, Ricardo’nun rant teorisinin değerlendirilmesinde, bir başlangıç noktası olarak, önem kazanmaktadır. Bununla birlikte, Smith’den Ricardo’ya, rant teorisindeki farklılaşma, ancak tarihsel arka planla birlikte anlam kazanmaktadır. Smith ve Ricardo’nun rant teorilerini, yaşadıkları dönemin tarihsel koşulları ve etkilendikleri dünya görüşleriyle birlikte analiz etmeyi amaçlayan bu makale, Smith ve Ricardo’nun rant teorilerini şekillendiren en önemli unsurun, sınai kapitalizmin gelişmişlik düzeyi olduğu sonucuna ulaşmıştır.
