Abstract (2. Language):
This article analyzes the relationship between the modernization concept of Ziya
Gökalp, who’s ideas had influenced the cultural policy of single party government
during 1930’s, and the theatre theory and practice of Ismayıl Hakkı Baltacıoğlu.
Taking into account the characteristical view of Baltacıoğlu about culture as a
pure reflection of national identity and his differentiation between civilized and
national, it is aimed to discuss the limits and weaknesses of this theory by a
critical approach on the basic elements of Turkish nationalism. In this respect, the
article can be considered as an effort to attract attention to some basic problems
of thinking over theatre with the nationalistic manner.
