Abstract (2. Language):
This paper focuses on the issue of orientalism, and on the question of West-
East controversy. As an introduction, the theoretical views of various well known
post-colonial scholars on orientalism and on the confrontation of West with East are
put forth with reference to the outcome of this worldwide conflict. Then, as an
application of these views, two American plays are examined in the light of the ideas
in question. The Irish-American Eugene O’Neill and the Chinese American David
Henry Hwang wrote plays within relatively different time spans, concerning
orientalism and the West-East conflict. These plays which are Marco Millions by
O’Neill and M.Butterfly by Hwang discuss various aspects of West vs East. It is interesting to trace and argue about the different perspectives of the dramatists on
the issue. One can reach the conclusion that even two dramatists from the same
culture, i.e. USA, can reflect completely different views on their understanding and
say of the West and the East. However, as far as the essence of the plays is
concerned, it is possible to say that both playwrights wish to see a compromise and
synthesis between these two conflicting worldviews.

Abstract (Original Language):
Marco Millions (Marko
Milyonlar) oyununda Oryantalizm konusuna modernist görüslerle yaklasmıs olan
Eugene O’Neill ile konuya postmodern açıdan bakan David Henry Hwang, oyunu M.
Butterfly’da (B./Bay/Bayan/ Kelebek) farklı görüsler öne sürmüslerdir.
