Abstract (2. Language):
In theatre, realism is inextricably connected to new social forces aiming at revising the
established social order. The development of realism as a concept in theatre history can be
traced in eighteenth century bourgeois drama. This article entitled “Bourgeois Drama, Denis
Diderot and Realism in Theatre” investigates the birth of realism in theatre by taking into
account Denis Diderot’s remarkable study “Paradox of Acting” whose primary focus is the
notion of actor-character split. Furthermore, the article gives an account of the theoritical basis
for his ideas of instruction through theatre which the French philosopher expounds further in
various essays such as “Commentaries on the ‘Natural Son’” and “Discourse on Dramatic Poetry”. Apart from that, the article aims at pointing out how Diderot’s theories united the
bourgeoisie against the Old Regime by functioning as an ideological instrument of cultural
change. The essay concludes with an evaluation from a contemporary perspective.
