Ahmet Midhat is one of the prominent individuals making outstanding contributions to Turkish novel. A number of stories and novels he has written have profound influences in Turkish literature. The author, aiming to educate the society through his works, referred to different subjects in his novels and stories in various ways. One of these subjects is physionomy that form the basis of the study. This branch of science tries to interpret characteristic compositions of individuals through their faces or part of the body. Ahmet Midhat shapes the characters in his novels according to the information revealed by physionomy. Also, he assigns physionomy to some of the characters in his novels, describes, and analyzes other character of his novels thorough their eyes. In this way that type of a nature novel characters have and what they can do are determined before hand and action is accordingly. In this manner, physionomy has a significant function in fiction novels. Naturally this branch of science is not observed only in Turkish literature but also in western literature. For instance, Balzac greatly benefited from physinomy in his novels. Consequently, Ahmet Midhat Efendi often applied physionomy while writing his novels and formed novel characters accordingly.
