The letters of the Byzantine emperor Manuel II Palaeologus have long been
drawn the attention of Byzantinists and as a result many studies have been
carried out since they were published for the first time by E. Legrand in 1893.
Since then G. Denis translated these letters into English along with his valuable
comments and prepared a new edition. These letters constitute one of the most
important contemporary Byzantine sources as they help fill a significant
historical gap in Byzantine historiography for the period covering the years from
1382 to the 1417. They also provide us with evidence which sheds light on some
important details concerning early Ottoman history. What follows is an analysis
of Manuel’s letters written during the expedition led by Sultan Bāyezīd I against
the ruler of Sivas, Ḳadi Burhān al-Dīn Aḥ mad. In 1391 Manuel II participated in
the military campaigns as a vassal of the Ottoman Sultan and while he was in the
Ottoman army, he wrote eight letters to various eminent bureaucrats such as
Demetrios Kydones (originally a Venetian citizen), Kabasilas, Phothos, and
Constantine Asanes within the Byzantine court. It is generally accepted thatEmperor Manuel wrote these letters in order to inform both the people of Constantinople and the Venetians who were curious to learn the fate of the Byzantine emperor and also to inform them about the course of the campaign. The letters, which are listed under the numbers 8-21 in Dennis’ edition, contain relatively reliable and impartial information about the course of the campaign. This present work, while discussing the reliability of the letters as a historical source, attempts to demonstrate their importance in terms of Ottoman history and in this respect presents interesting cases that reveal information about the relations between Sultan Bayezid I and Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus.Abstract (Original Language):
Bizans İmparatoru II. Manuel Palaiologos’un mektupları E. Legrand tarafından 1893 yılında ilk yayımlandığından beri Bizantinistlerin dikkatini çekmiş ve bu mektuplardan istifade edilmek suretiyle bir çok araştırma yapılmıştır. G. Dennis ise bu mektupları İngilizceye tercüme ederek değerli yorumları ile birlikte yayımlamıştır. İmparator II. Manuel Palaiologos’un mektupları, 1382-1417 yıllarını kapsayan dönem açısından Bizans tarihçiliğinde önemli bir boşluğu doldurmaya yardımcı olduğu kadar, söz konusu dönemde Osmanlı Devleti’nin kısmen karanlıklarda kalmış tarihine de ışık tutması sebebiyle değerli Bizans kaynakları arasında yeralır. Bizans İmparatoru II. Manuel, 1391 yılında Osmanlı Sultanı I. Bâyezid’ın Sivas hâkimi Kadı Burhaneddin üzerine düzenlediği sefere Osmanlı sultanının vassalı olarak katılmış ve Osmanlı karargâhındayken Bizans sarayında aslen Venedik vatandaşı olan Demetrios Kidones, Kabasilas, Phothos, Konstantin Asanes gibi ünlü devlet adamlarına 8 mektup yazmıştır. İmparator Manuel’in bu mektupları hem Konstantinopolis halkını, hem de İmparatorun akıbetini öğrenmeye istekli Bizans’ın o dönem müttefiki Venediklileri, seferin gidişâtı hakkında bilgilendirmek amacıyla yazdığı düşünülmektedir. G. Dennis’in çalışmasında 14’ten 21’e kadar rakamlarla numaralandırdığı bu mektuplar, seferin ilerleyişi hakkında güvenilir ve nispeten tarafsız olduğu kabul edilen bilgiler içermektedir. Bu makalede, söz konusu mektupların tarihi kaynak olarak güvenirliği tartışılırken, Osmanlı tarihi açısından önemi ortaya konulmaya çalışılacak ve bu bağlamda Sultan Yıldırım I. Bâyezid ile Bizans İmparatoru II. Manuel Palaiologos arasında yaşananlara dair bazı ilginç örneklere yer verilecektir.
