Control Design for Active Ankle Foot Orthosis with the Application of Fuzzy Logic

Abstract (Original Language):
This paper presents the control design of an ankle foot orthosis for the disabled gait. Ankle foot orthosis is an orthotic device intended to assist or to restore the motions of the ankle foot complex. It uses an actuator to assist the ankle movement as required, during the swing phase of the leg in each gait cycle. The controllers used in the conventional ankle foot orthosis to control the actuator, does not use the property of synchronization of the feet and the main focus is on drop foot gait correction. In this article, control design for active ankle foot orthosis with the application of fuzzy logic is presented. The logic is developed to control the disabled gait by using the property of symmetry in the foot movements. The gait patterns are monitored through National Instrument’s data acquisition system which is interfaced with a gyro sensor. The sensor data is then fed as an input to the fuzzy logic controller which generates the control signal for the actuator in real time.
