Abstract (2. Language):
The aim of this study is to determine the figurative language in the novel Ateşten Gömlek by Adıvar
and analyze the English translation of those elements. Of the figurative elements, hyperbole, irony,
metaphor, personification, and understatement were included in analyzing the figurative language.
The original Turkish version of the novel and its English translation by Khan (1938) were used as data
collection tools. Following a detailed reading of the book in Turkish, figurative elements were
determined by the researchers. In analyzing the data from the translated text, Kasar and Tuna’s
(2017) Systematics of Designificative Tendencies was adopted as the guide. As a result, in translating
the novel into English, the cultural aspects of the source text were preserved figurative language-wise,
however in very rare occasions there was over-interpretation in transferring the figurative elements.
