In this article, practical considerations, content and illustrations, readability, and coherence were determined as important textbook characteristics with which content area teachers or other decision makers judge the quality of textbooks. A quality content area textbook should cover the topics in the curriculum with enough depth and with quality illustrations. In addition, a quality textbook should be readable for its target group, and the organization of the book should be globally and locally coherent. This article concluded that finding such textbooks might not be possible every time. In that case, content area teachers should adapt the textbook for individual students.

Bu araştırmada ilk anda göz önünde bulundurulması gereken faktörler, içerik ve resimler, okunabilirlik ve bağdaşıklık kavramları branş öğretmenleri veya diğer karar vericiler tarafından ders kitabının kalitesini belirlemede kullanılabilecek başlıklar olarak ele alınmıştır. Kaliteli bir konu alanı ders kitabı, program konularını yeteri kadar derinlikte ve kaliteli resimler ile sunmalıdır. Buna ek olarak, kaliteli bir ders kitabı kendi hedef kitlesi tarafından okunabilir olmalı ve kitabın organizasyonu bütününde ve alt bölümlerinde bağlaşık ve bağdaşık olmalıdır. Bu makale, bu özelliklere sahip bir ders kitabının bulunmasının her zaman mümkün olmadığını ve bu durumda branş öğretmenlerinin ders kitabını öğrencileri için bireysel olarak uyarlaması gerektiğini belirtmektedir
