This study discusses the newest perspectives on the history of education in Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern Europe. The paper first examines some of the basic types of the Medieval and Renaissance schools and the peculiar courses they offered to their students. In this way, the basic aspects about how and in what ways the pre-modern schools differed from the modern education in scope and in extent are determined. After briefly discussing the traditional views about the medieval education, new historical approaches, which may radically change our understanding of the medieval education are analysed. The study occassionaly used some primary sources in order to determine the relationship between gender and the nature of education in the late Middle Ages. The paper lastly attempts to reconstruct the evolution of the educational institutions in Western Europe. The basic lines of the evolution of the Medieval and Renaissance schools and their role in the formation of the conception of the modern education in western Europe are accordingly discussed.

Bu çalışma Ortaçağ, Rönesans ve Erken Modern Avrupa eğitim tarihindeki yeni yaklaşımları irdelemektedir. Makale ilk olarak bazı temel Ortaçağ ve Rönesans okullarını ve bu okulların öğrencilerine sundukları dersleri incelemektedir. Bu yolla modern öncesi okulların hangi şekilde ve ne ölçüde farklılıklar gösterdikleri belirlenmektedir. Ortaçağ eğitim tarihine ait geleneksel yaklaşımları kısaca tartıştıktan sonra Ortaçağa bakışımızı temelden değiştirebilecek yeni yaklaşımlar analiz edilmektedir. Çalışmada bireylerin cinsiyet farklarının eğitim biçimlerindeki farklılaşması ile ne ölçüde etkileşim içinde olduğunu incelemek için bazı arşiv belgeleri kullanmıştır. Makale son olarak batı Avrupa’daki eğitim kurumlarının hangi süreçte ve hangi biçimde değişim geçirdiğinin tarihini ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadır. Ortaçağ ve Rönesans okullarının temel dönüşüm süreçleri ve bu okulların Avrupa’da modern eğitim kavramının şekillenmesindeki rolleri tartışılmaktadır.
