Abstract (2. Language):
After the turn of the present century, in Üne with the political relafcionships betveen Ottoman and German governments a series of nev iııstitutions were also founded. Turkish-Geraan Association was among the most powerful of those, aiming to reînforee the political and economic goals of the governments with cultural and popular affairs. House of Friendship as named by the prominent Cttoman premier of the time, Talat Paşa, is the most outstanding atteıapt in the process of realisation of these affairs. The Association endeavors to establish relationships betveen the nations supporting the common relationships organized by the political institutions. A multi-purpose cultural building vas proposed to be built at Çeraberlîtaş quarter of istanbul where the number of nonturkish inhabitants vas then negligible too. A counterpart of this building was also hoped to be built in Berlin to facilitate the cultural interaction between the countries. It is as a part of the imperialîstic tendencies of the German Empire to hava a control över Anatolia as the one of the basic links in a chain of operations on her vay to the resources of Persian Gulf and india. German policy on Anatolia is quite different than the other European countries with similar aims, these did not much cultural concerns as such. House of Friendship was politically supported by Kaiser Uilhelm II himself, finaucially German industrial establishraents vere interested in offering funds. Apart from its political and economic significance the architectural aspects of the competition are exceptionally important on their ovn. The competition provided a ground for the eminent architects of teh ear to display themselves, especîally, for those pioneerîng in the expressionlst raovement. The technical organîsation of the competition was sponsored by Deutsche Merkbund. f/erkbund limited the entry for its twelve distinguished members. Among these Halter Gropius failed to participate, as he could not obtain a leave from the front. The participants were Peter Behrens, German Bestelmeyer, Hugo Eberhardt, August Endell, Theodor Fischer, Bruno Paul, Richard Kiemerschmid, Bruno Taut, Martin Elsâsser, Hans Poeİ2İg and Paul Bonatz. 'The last four of these competitors are particularly important from the point of view of the Turkish architectura as they vere offered chances of design and building in Turkey after the constitution of the Republican Regime. The assesement panel was also composed of the same architecfcs with additional members from Turkey and from the Association. Ahmet Keraalettin atıd M. Vedat Tek vere the Turkish architects in the jury. The vinning entry vas German Bestelmeyer's. Even though the more detailed and developed stages of his proposal had been accomplished after the German failure in the World War I and the decline of the Ottomans, House of îriedship has never been realised.
