Prof.Dr. Turhan Baytop
(1920-2002
) graduated from the School of Pharmacy of Istanbul University. He chose to stay at the University as an assistant in the Department of Pharmacognosy, where eventually he was to become the director. Prof. T. Baytop concentrated his research on the Turkish flora, especially on the geophytes, and the medicinal, poisonous and other indigenous plants, their vernacular names and uses. He travelled widely in Turkey, and his expeditions proved immensely rewarding. His findings were published in a series of volumes (Baytop 1984, 1997, 1999, 2000). Turhan Baytop's plant collection which counts 10750 specimens, with geophytes numbering 2200, is currently housed in the Herbarium of the Faculty of Pharmacy of Istanbul University (ISTE). He also has specimens in other herbaria: E, EGE, G, K, ISTF, Hb.Hub.-Mor. Flora of Turkey (1965-2001) cites 950 of his specimens, including 32 types. Most of these types were collected from West, East, Central and Southern Anatolia, except two which were collected from Istanbul and Thrace. He is the type collector of an old garden rose of E. Anatolia, named Rosa 'Professor Turhan Baytop'. Five internationally recognized taxa, that were new to Turkey entered in the Flora of Turkey thanks to T. Baytop's specimens. He cultivated the bulbs he gathered during his travels in his own garden, and his personal herbarium comprised, at its full extent, more than 500 species, of which 266 belonged to bulbous plants (Baytop 2003). Prof. T. Baytop was also interested in wild animals, and wrote two articles on the Panthera species of Anatolia (Baytop, 1973, 1974).
