Based on “Je Ne Parle Pas Français”, an important short story by popular feminist writer, Katherine Mansfield, this study focuses on the reflection of men’s and women’s lives in a patriarchal society from a rather prejudiced man’s point of view. Thus, the gender issue in real life will be analysed through the protagonist, Raoul Duquette’s diminitive and cruel attitudes towards women in general and to Mouse, the female character in the story and through his ambiguous relationship with Dick Harmon, the other male character in the story. Dissecting the story by a feminist approach, the study mainly consists of three parts. In the first part, Raoul Duquette, the protagonist and the narrator of the story shall be examined in detail from various angles such as his childhood, character, bisexuality and prejudices whilst in the second part, Dick Harmon’s personality is to be analysed as a man, writer and someone experiencing the Oedipus Syndrome. Finally, the female character, Mouse’s state in the society as a woman and Raoul and Dick’s destructive effect on her life shall be emphasised in the third part.

Bu çalışmada, ünlü feminist yazar Katherine Mansfield’in önemli kısa öykülerinden “Je Ne Parle Pas Français” temel alınarak, ataerkil bir toplumda erkeklerin ve kadınların hayatlarının oldukça önyargılı bir erkeğin gözünden aktarılması konu alınmıştır. Böylece, gerçek hayattaki cinsiyet ayrımcılığı, başkahraman Raoul Duquette’in genel olarak kadınlara ve öyküdeki kadın karakter Fare’ye yönelik aşağılayıcı ve acımasız tutumu ve öyküdeki diğer erkek karakter Dick ile olan belirsiz ilişkisi yoluyla analiz edilecektir. Öykünün feminist bir bakış açısıyla incelendiği çalışma, temel olarak üç kısımdan oluşmaktadır. İlk kısımda öykünün başkahramanı ve anlatıcısı Raoul Duquette çocukluğu, kişiliği, biseksüelliği ve önyargıları gibi pek çok açıdan detaylı olarak ele alınırken, ikinci kısımda Dick Harmon’un bir erkek, bir yazar ve ayrıca Oedipus Sendromu yaşayan birisi olarak karakter analizi yapılacaktır. Son olarak, üçüncü kısımda ise, öykünün kadın karakteri Fare’nin bir kadın olarak toplumdaki konumu ve Raoul ile Dick’in onun hayatı üzerindeki yıkıcı etkileri vurgulanacaktır.
