Trends of Video Use in Distance Education: A Research Synthesis

Although there are various studies regarding the use of video in distance education, very limited amount synthesizing research on the subject is available. In this study, 253 studies published between 1990 and 2015 are analyzed and a research trend is identified regarding educational video use in distance education. Findings from the review indicate that there is a rising research trend in applied fields such as health and engineering, focusing on the technical aspects of video. However, it has also been found that video use in distance education has not been sufficiently studied regarding its social aspects. Based on the findings of the study, suggestions are made for further studies. Innovative research suggestions about using 360o video and video games in distance education are also offered.

Uzaktan eğitimde video kullanımına ilişkin farklı alanlardan çeşitli çalışmalar bulunsa da araştırma sentezi çalışmalarının yeterli olmadığı söylenebilir. Bu araştırmada 1990-2015 yılları arasında yayınlanmış 253 çalışma analiz edilerek uzaktan eğitimde eğitsel video kullanımına ilişkin bir araştırma trendi ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgular sağlık ve mühendislik gibi uygulamalı alanlarda ve videonun teknik yönlerine yönelik bir araştırma trendinin olduğunu göstermiştir. Buna karşın uzaktan eğitimde video kullanımının sosyal yönleriyle yeterli düzeyde incelenmediği görülmüştür. Araştırma sonuçlarına dayalı olarak ileride yapılabilecek çalışmalar için önerilerde bulunulmuştur. 360o video ve video oyunlarının uzaktan eğitimde kullanılmasına ilişkin yenilikçi araştırma önerileri de sunulmuştur.
