The purpose of present study was to examine the relationships between Five-Factor model of personality and academic achievement of undergraduates. The sample of the study is composed of total 458 undergraduate students (284 male, 174 female) from two state universities in Ankara and Istanbul, Turkey. Personality was assessed using the personality questionnaire developed by the researchers based on Five Factor Model. Academic achievement of undergraduates was calculated via students’ grade point average (GPA) that was computed based on participants’ grades for the previous semesters. Among personality traits (measured by self-reports), except extroversion, the other traits, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and emotional stability, and openness correlated positively with academic achievement (or GPA). However, when all measured variables were entered together into a regression model, conscientiousness was the strongest predictor of academic achievement, being followed by openness. Also, results indicated that the psychometric properties of the developed scale for present study were found to be partially satisfactory and might be used to evaluate personality traits in future studies.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinin akademik başarıları ile beş faktörlü kişilik özellikleri arasındaki olası ilişkileri incelemektir. Çalışmanın örneklemi, Ankara ve İstanbul’da bulunan iki devlet üniversitesindeki 458 öğrenciyi (284’ü erkek, 174’ü kadın) kapsamaktadır. Araştırmada incelenen kişilik özellikleri, Beş Faktörlü Kişilik Kuramı’na dayalı olarak yazında mevcut olan envanterlerden istifade edilerek geliştirilen bir ölçek vasıtasıyla, öğrencilerin akademik başarıları ise genel not ortalamaları temel alınarak ölçülmüştür. Araştırma sonucunda, beş faktörlü kişilik özelliklerinden dışa dönüklük haricinde, sorumluluk, uyumluluk, duygusal denge ve açıklık faktörlerinin akademik başarı ile olumlu yönde ilişkili olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Tüm değişkenlerin çoklu regresyon modelinde ele alınmasıyla, sorumluluğun akademik başarıyı yordayan en önemli özellik olduğu ve bunu açıklık özelliğinin izlediği görülmüştür. Buna ilave olarak, bu çalışma ile geliştirilen beş faktörlü kişilik ölçeğinin psikometrik özelliklerinin kısmen tatmin edici düzeyde olduğu ve ileriki çalışmalarda kullanılabileceği sonucuna varılmıştır.
