The balance of armed forces in Europe, Southeast Asia and Korea is an issue that guides the bulk of the defense expenditures of countries. The evaluation of these balances involves the estimation of not only a probable conventional war but also the escalations that might lead to the utilization of nuclear weapons. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that conventional forces be meticulously compared and reviewed.
Military conflict is a dynamic process, and many factors play a role throughout this process. Thus, the future of conventional defense can not be projected merely through a static comparison of the weapon inventories of contending parties. It requires a dynamic analysis. During the last decades the use of Lanchester equations, developed by and named for Frederic William Lanchester, has become widely popular in the this kind of analyses.

Avrupa, Güneybatı Asya ve Kore'deki Konvansiyonel askerî güçler dengesi ülkelerin savunma harcamalarının büyük çoğunluğunu yönlendiren bir konudur. Bu Konvansiyonel dengelerin değerlendirilmesine en nihayet konvansiyonel bir savaş olasılığının tahminleri ve hatta nükleer silâhlara başvurmaya kadar götürecek tırmanışların kestirimi de dahildir. Bu nedenle konvansiyonel güçlerin hassasiyet içinde kıyaslanması ve takibi kritik önemi haizdir.
Silâhlı mücadele dinamik bir süreç olup bu süreç içerisinde zamana karşı çok çeşitli etkenler rol alırlar. Bu nedenle de konvansiyonel savunmanın geleceği yalnızca rakip tarafların silâh envanterini statik bir mukayeseye vurma yoluyla belirlenemez, dinamik analiz şart olur. Son on yıllar boyunca bu çeşit analizlerde Frederick William Lanchester 'in geliştirip kendi adını verdiği Lanchester denklemleri öne çıkmıştır.
