Gergi uzun zamandan beri kronik bir kalp hastalığından muztarip bulunan, yaşı da bir hayli ilerlemiş olan hocamızın ölümü bir sürpriz teşkil etmemekle beraber, ne de olsa ölüm çok sevilen ve sayılan insanlar için, hususiyle Kessler gibi bütün ömrü, hiç bir zaman sonu gelmiyecek çırpıntılı, şiddetli, çetin ve fırtınalı mücadelelerle geçmiş bir şahsiyet için, kendisine bütün kalpleriyle ivazsız ve garazsız şekilde bağlı olanlar ve merhumdan her şeyden önce bir nebze dahi olsa ahlâk, fazilet, diğergâmlık ve insanlık dersi almış bulunanlar tarafından hiç bir zaman akla getirilmek istenmeyen nahoş bir akibet idi. Her halde bütün hayatını, ikbal ve saadetini hürriyet ve insanlık mücadelesi uğruna feda etmeyip, bir çok meslekdaşları gibi bir kenarda durup oturacak karakterde yaratılsa idi, hocamız bu yolda feda ettiği «kalb» ini korur ve daha uzun yıllar yaşatabilirdi.
