Ağustos 1963 ayı içinde Cumhuriyet Gazetesinde haber şeklinde Prof. Gerhard Kessler'in vefatını teessürle okudum. îçimde bir eziklik hissettim o anda. İster istemez 1947 hatıralarıma döndüm. Hareketli olduğu kadar sosyal dâvalara inanmış ilim adamı Kess-Ier'i İstanbul Basın Teknisyenleri Sendikasının tertiplediği hafta sonu sohbetlerinde tanımıştım. Toplantılar bir nevi eğitim seminerleri şeklindeydi. Hatırladığıma göre bu sohbetlere Sayın Ord. Prof. Ziyaettin Fındıkoğlu, Orhan Tuna, Reşat Nalbantoğlu, Ekmel Zadil bîr menfaat karşılığı olmaksızın katılırlardı. Sendika yöneticisi olarak devamlılar arasında sendikanın sorumluları Şeref Hivel, İbrahim Bilge, Ziya Üçer, Kâmil Ataclı, ben ve şu anda isimlerini hatırlayamadığım sayısı kabarık yöneticiler vardı.
Toplantılar geç saatlere kadar devam ederdi. İtiraf ederim ki, o tarihlerde sendika yöneticilerinin kültür seviyeleri arzulanan seviyede değildi. Hocaya çok sual sorardık. Öğrenmek istiyorduk sendikacılığı. Mesuliyet almıştık. Onun için başarmalıydık. Heyecanlıydık hepimiz. Kessler ve diğer gerçek dostlar bıkıp usanmadan sorularımızı cevaplandırır bizi tenvir ederlerdi.
Bugünkü gibi hatırlıyorum. Büyük insan bu günleri görmüş olacak ki, «sendikalar ilerde güçlenecek, toplulukta söz sahibi olacaksınız, ama bu gün bebek denecek kadar zayıfsınız, taleplerinizde sert gitmeyin, işverenlerin boyunları altına girmeye bakın ve işçiye faideli olun» derdi.
