Sosyal evrim (evolution sociale) ise özellikle uzun dönemde —hattâ bir kaç kuşağı kapsayan dönemde— ortaya çıkan değişmeler bütünüdür. Bu anlamda, H. Spencer, Au. Compte, K. Marx, Durkheim..., kişüerin ve toplumların eğilimlerini, gelişmelerini ve bunları etkileyen faktörleri açıklamaya çalışmışlardır.
