Today, the Western European countries and the unemployment insurance system in the United States on the one hand due to prolonged periods of high unemployment rates and unemployment on the other hand a really great under pressure. Advanced allegedly traditional unemployment insurance programs, nature does not seem to solve the problems of unemployment in the present time. Sevketmekte looking for new approaches in some countries these developments, some other countries, however, are an effort to cut spending.
In fact, unemployment rates in Western European countries in the 1950s and '60s, there was remarkably low compared to the United States. These rates are relatively elevated oil crises of 1973, but then fell again. 1980'Ier unemployment rates increased rapidly, and today we see that this is maintained at high levels.
On the other hand unemployment is relatively decreased in the United States since 1983. The increase in the average duration of unemployment is the unemployment rate increased. This development has been weaker than in the United States than in Western European countries. Employment increased slightly since 1975 in Europe, the United States, this increase has been very rapid.

Günümüzde Batı Avrupa ülkelerinde ve ABD'de işsizlik sigortası sistemi bir yandan yüksek işsizlik oranlarından ve diğer yandan işsizlik sürelerinin uzamasından dolayı gerçekten büyük baskı altındadır. İleri sürüldüğüne göre, geleneksel işsizlik sigortası programlan, halihazır işsizlik sorunlarını çözecek nitelikte gözükmemektedir. Bu gelişmeler bazı ülkeleri yeni yaklaşımlar aramaya sevketmekte, diğer bazı ülkeler ise, harcamaları kısma konusunda gayret sarf etmektedirler.
Aslında 1950'ler ve 60'larda Batı Avrupa ülkelerinde işsizlik oranları, ABD'ye nazaran dikkati çekecek derecede düşük bulunuyordu. Bu oranlar 1973 petrol kriziyle nisbeten yükselmiş, fakat sonra tekrar düşmüştür. İşsizlik oranlarının 1980'Ier de hızla arttığını ve günümüzde bu yüksek seviyesini muhafaza ettiğini görüyoruz.
Buna mukabil ABD'de 1983'den bu yana işsizlik nisbeten azalmıştır. İşsizlik oranlarının artmasıyla işsizliğin ortalama süreleri de yükselmiştir. Bu gelişme Batı Avrupa ülkelerine nazaran A.B.D'de daha zayıf olmuştur. 1975'den bu yana Avrupa da istihdam yavaşça artarken, ABD'de bu artış çok hızlı olmuştur.
