Abstract (2. Language):
In this study, we aimed to investigate intraabdominal part of umbilical vessels in human fetuses during the fetal period by light microscope. We studied 90 (45 males, 45 females) human fetuses with no external anomaly and gestational ages between 10 and 40 weeks. Total vessel diameter, lumen diameter, wall thickness, tunica adventicia thickness, tunica muscularis thickness and vaso vasorum number of the microscopic cross section taken from umbilical vessels were determined. There were no pathologies related to umbilical vein and median umbilical ligaments. There are two Meckel's Diverticulum in the fetuses with no external pathology and anomaly. We determined two umbilical artery agenesis on the left and one umbilical artery agenesis on the right. Positive and meaningful correlation was found between the gestational age and morphometric measurements of umbilical vessels. We found differences between morphometric parameters in the second trimester, the third trimester andfull term period during the fetal period. The vessels diameters, lumen diameter, tunica muscularis thickness and tunica adventicia thickness were different between vena umbilicalis and arteriae umbilicalis (right and left). There were no differences related to vaso vasorum number and tunica adventicia thickness between groups in fetal period. With more expressions of morphometric parameters of umbilical vessels at each gestational age, determination of pathologies of umbilical vessels and some syndromes can be helped. We believe that the data about the development of the umbilical vessels obtained in our study will contribute to the studies on this issue in the future.
