their expression in literary works. In some periods of the history of the United States of America, there were some civil wars. The United States of America entered such devastating wars as World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War. Besides, it fought in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan more recently. Whether the USA was right or not is among the significant issues that have been throughout the world. The wars of the United States of America took its place in various written and visual resources. Literary works has had an important place in these resources. Stories are considered in these literary works. The wars the United States of America joined are given in child stories as well. Some of these war stories were written in America while others were translated from other languages into English and published in the USA. In the current study, the wars the USA entered were determined in the course books teaching the American history at high schools and the stories told in these books were investigated. There are also other books and articles evaluating the child stories telling wars. The aim of this study is investigate how these stories explain war and peace to children. Could these stories tell bad affect of war and importance of peace? Document analysis method is used in this study. Historians often use this method. Stories are very effective aspect of narration and picture. According to these stories, wars are harmful not only for people but also for animals and cities. Writing stories are very important for telling wars that had been taken place in different part of the world, in the same time it mentions the value of peace for children. These stories which investigated can be example for new stories which will be written in Turkey.

Bilindiği üzere tarih ve edebiyat arasında güçlü bir bağ vardır. Dünya üzerinde yaşanan savaşlar edebi eserlere de yansımaktadır. Amerika Birleşik Devletleri tarihi hem iç savaşlarla, hem de başka devletlerle yapılan savaşlarla doludur. ABD, 20. yüzyılın iki dünya savaşıyla Kore ve Vietnam savaşlarına katılmıştır. Bunun yanında yakın dönemde Irak ve Afganistan’da da savaşmıştır. ABD’nin savaşlarının haklılığı ve haksızlığı dünyada tartışılan en önemli konular arasında gelmektedir. ABD’nin yaptığı savaşlar yazılı ve görsel kaynaklarda geniş biçimde işlenmiştir. Bu kaynaklar arasında edebî eserler, edebî eserler içerisinde hikâyeler önemli yer tutmaktadır. ABD’nin dâhil olduğu savaşlar çocuk hikâyelerine de yansımıştır. Bu savaş hikâyelerinden bazıları Amerika’da yazılmış, bazıları ise farklı ülkelerin dillerinden İngilizce’ye çevrilerek ABD’de yayınlanmıştır. Bu çalışmanın amacı hikâye kitaplarının, savaş ve barışı çocuklara nasıl anlattığını ortaya koymaktır. Hikâyelerin, savaşın kötü yüzünü ve barışın değerini öğrencilere etkili bir tarzda anlatıp anlatamadığı sorgulanacaktır. Çalışmada tarihçilerin sıklıkla başvurdukları doküman analizi yönteminden yararlanılmıştır. Ayrıca savaşı ve barışı konu edinen çocuk hikâyelerini değerlendiren kitaplar ve makalelerden de yararlanılmıştır. İncelenen hikâye kitapları dil ve resimleme bakımından oldukça başarılıdırlar. Savaşları anlatan hikâye kitapları, savaşların yalnızca insanlara değil şehirlere, hayvanlara hatta kitaplara da zarar verdiğini göstermiştir. Hikâye kitaplarında ülkelerin sahip olduğu kültürel öğeler de yansıtılmıştır. Dünyanın çeşitli yerlerinde yaşanmış savaşları anlatan, barışın değerini çocuklara aktaran hikâye kitaplarının Türkiye’de yazılması önemlidir. İncelenen hikâye kitapları yazılacak olan hikâye kitapları için örnek olabilir.
