One of the most important writers of the second half of the 19th
century Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) didn't have the opportunity to
complete the novelBouvard and Pecuchet(1881) which is the sub¬
heading of " encyclopedia of human stupidity", because he died i n 8
may 1880 due to brain haemmorhage. The comic book encyclopedia
and the story of despair i n novel form w h i c h were penned i n 1881, after
the death of the author, dwells on corruption of information, disrepute
and human effort spent i n vain. Flaubert aims to demystify the
frustrations and dissapointments of the bourgeoisie lacking art spirit
through Bouvard and Pecuchet, the heroes of the novel.
"To do whatever you want" madness of two so called pettybourgeois
resulted i n the desire to seek adventure in different areas.
The eager attempts and applications i n disciplines s u c h as Literature,
music, gymnastic, archeology, religion, health, chemistry, history and
anatomy appetite s u c h as have resulted i n disappointment because
they intend to play the role of two retired scientist secretary.It recalls
the philosophy stated by the Renaissance writer François Rabelais
(1494-1553), "the unconscious science leads to the collapse of the soul".
The two like-minded desire fort he sake of their enthusiasm in
pontification i n areas that they have slight theoric knowledge. This is
the novel plotting the adventurers setting out for Journey of time and
knowledge that always ended i n disaster.
Bouvard and Pecuchet, wiseacre members of the bourgeois
class,try to play the role of scientists. At the end of their stories,
travels, adventures,they understand that the p a t h to art and science is
by method, patience, effort and respect and they conclude i n their
former professions as a clerk...

19.yüzyılın ikinci yarısının önemli yazarlarından Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880) alt başlığı "insanlığın budalalığı ansiklopedisi" olan Bouvard ve Pecuchet(1881) adlı romanı tamamlama fırsatı bulamaksızın 8 mayıs 1880 yılında bir beyin kanaması sonucu hayatını kaybetmiştir. Yazarın ölümünden sonra 1881 yılında kaleme alınan komik ansiklopedi ve roman şeklindeki umutsuzluk hikâyesi; bilginin yozlaşması, itibarsızlaşması ve boşu boşuna harcanan insan çabasını konu eder. Flaubert, söz konusu romanda Bouvard ve Pecuchet kahramanlar aracılığı ile dönemin sanat ruhu olmayan burjuva takımının hayal kırıklıklarını gözler önüne sermeyi amaçlar.
İki küçük burjuva bozuntusunun "her istediğini yapma" çılgınlığı, sonucu tartışılacak farklı alanlarda macera aramalarına seb ep olmuştur. Edebiyat, müzik, jimnastik, arkeoloji, din, sağlık, kimya, tarih ve anatomi gibi disiplinlerdeki iştahlı girişim ve uygulamalar hüsranla sonuçlanmıştır. Çünkü kısıtlı teorik bilgilerle, iki emekli kâtip bilim adamı rolünü oynamak arzusundalar. Rönesans dönemi yazarlarından François Rabelais'nin (1494-1553) ifade ettiği gibi " bilinçsiz bilim, ruhun çöküşünü doğurur" felsefesini hatırlatır.
Bu iki kafadar yüzeysel teorik bilgi sahibi oldukları alanlarda uygulama ve bilgelik taslama hevesi uğruna farklı bir hayat yaşamak isterler. Zaman ve bilgi yolculuğuna çıkan bu maceraperestlerin yolculuğu daima felaketle sona eren hikâyesinin anlatıldığı romandır.
Bouvard ve Pecuchet adlı burjuva sınıfına mensup bilir bilmezler bilim adamlığı oyununu oynamaktalar. Hikâyelerinin, yolculuklarının, maceralarının sonunda sanatın ve bilimin yolunun; metot, sabır, emek ve saygıdan geçtiği sonucuna vararak eski meslekleri olan kâtipliğe geri dönmekten başka çarelerinin olmadığını anlarlar...
