Journal Name:

Publication Year:

Abstract (2. Language):
Objective: Adolescence, like childhood and senility is a special period of life. The aim of this study was to screen the first year students of Çukurova University for psychiatric symptoms using Symptom Check List-90-R questionnaire. Materials and Methods: A sample of 468 representing 1803 first year university students at Çukurova University was screened for psychiatric symptoms using the SCL-90-R. Results: The response rate was 86% (n=403); 40.6% of the students were female and 59.4% were male. The first three symptoms were obsessive-compulsive symptoms (%61.2), paranoid ideas (%55.1), and sensitivity in interpersonal relations (%50.6). There was statistically significant relationship between Global Severity Index and student's residence area, mother's occupation, alcohol consumption, and smoking behavior of the student. Gender, place of living, occupation of mother, educational status of father, smoking behavior, and alcohol consumption of the stu¬dent were found to be significantly related to most of the subindexes. Conclusion: University students show many psychiatric symptoms, especially, for obsessive-compulsive symptoms, sensitivity in interpersonal relationships, and paranoid ideas. The use of tests such as SCL-90-R may facilitate the detection of the students with psychiatric disorders.
