Intrauterine growth depends on the mother's wellbeing, placental and fetal factors. Intrauterine growth is subdivided as, hyperplasia in the beginning, later hyperplasia as well as hypertrophy, and last¬ly a period of hypertrophy. Intrauterine growth may follow a slow, normal or fast growth rates. During the prenatal period, detection of intrauterine growth retardation or macrosomia, and if needed, interventions are important. Babies with growth retardation or large for gestational age are faced with some problems during the neonatal period as well as being candidates for metabolic and car¬diovascular complications during further ages. Length, weight, head, chest, waist and left mid arm circumference measurements should be taken after delivery in order to determine a normal (AGA), small (SGA) or large (LGA) baby according to pregnancy week and sex based tables and percentages specific for this population. Body measurements should be interpreted according to the local population standards instead of international references. Follow up of the intrauterine growth and its evaluation by gyne¬cologists, neonatologists and family physicians, are important for the purposes of detecting early and late problems.

intrauterin büyüme anne, plasenta ve fetal faktörlere bağlı olarak gerçekleşir. Büyüme önce hiperplazi, sonra hiperplazi ve hipertro-fi, son olarak hipertrofi dönemleri ile tamamlanır. intrauterin bü¬yüme yavaş, normal veya hızlı seyredebilir. Prenatal dönemde in-trauterin büyüme geriliği veya makrozominin saptanması ve gere¬kirse müdahele edilmesi önemlidir. Büyüme geriliği veya iri olan bebekler yenidoğan döneminde bazı problemler yaşadıkları gibi ileri yaşlarda metabolik ve kardiovasküler sorunlara adaydırlar. Doğumdan sonra bebeğin boy, ağırlık, baş çevresi, göğüs çevresi, ka¬rın çevresi ve sol orta kol çevresi ölçüleri alınır, topluma özgü ge¬belik haftası ve cinsiyete dayalı tablo ve eğrilere göre normal, kü¬çük veya iri bebek olduğu saptanır. Ölçülerin yorumu uluslararası standartlar yerine, o toplumu yansıtan referans değerlerine göre yapılmalıdır. intrauterin büyümenin izlenmesi ve değerlendirilmesi kadın-doğum, neonatoloji ve aile hekimleri için erken ve geç problemler açısından önem taşımaktadır.
